TOM MARTIN

Offering five generations of fire service, joined the crew in his 60s.

“With a station that makes our team stronger and healthier, we can keep protecting the place we love.”

Tom’s path to Hygiene Fire & Rescue is as unique as it is inspiring. A retired TV writer who once worked on The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live, he moved to Colorado to be closer to his grandkids. But when his son joined the department, Tom followed that lead – together rounding out five generations of the Martin family fire service.

Even as one of the older volunteers, Tom was determined to earn his place among the young and hardworking team. “I didn’t want to be a charity case. I worked hard in the Academy and on every call. Now I know I belong.” Today he’s been embraced as part of the team, mentoring younger firefighters and pitching in wherever needed. He recalls the Marshall Fire, when fierce winds tested every firefighter in Colorado. “We saved one house by sheer grit, but watching entire neighborhoods burn reinforced one truth. Whatever it takes, we have to be ready.”

For Tom, Hygiene Fire & Rescue is family – young and old, volunteers and career firefighters, all pulling together for a safer community. He’s proud of how far the department has come from its early days but knows their facilities haven’t kept pace. “We’ve built a culture as strong as any career department. Now it’s time for a station that matches the heart of this team.”
